Spring is a little more than a month away! Sustainable Mullica is gearing up for its most ambitious project - the Mullica Township Schoolyard Garden! We will bring real hands-on learning to the students while growing fruits and vegetables they will love to eat! We will have a meeting soon to discuss our timeline and organize volunteers, but first a plea for donations!

Above are two lists, one for plants and the other for tools/equipment needed (see tabs on top of post) If you, or someone you know, would like to make a donation please contact me ASAP.

I have spent hours researching schoolyard gardens and making phone calls. I am trying to be organized and communicate clearly. I want success! If you have any suggestions or ways to help please give me a shout.

SUSTAINABLE LANDSCAPING SERIES

I’m delighted to be able to announce that Douglas Tallamy will be the keynote speaker for our three part Sustainable Landscaping Series. Tallamy’s book, Bringing Nature Home; How You Can Sustain Wildlife with Native Plants, was met with wide acclaim and has greatly influenced the sustainable landscaping movement.

The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey is sponsoring Tallamy’s presentation which will take place on Monday, March 19 at 7:00 PM in the College Center Theater on Stockton’s campus in Pomona, NJ. The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the South Jersey Shore, the Atlantic County Master Gardeners: Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Atlantic County, and the Task Force for a Sustainable Galloway (Go Green Galloway) are co-sponsoring the presentation. The talk which will be followed by a Q & A, is free and open to the public.

The second and third workshops in the Sustainable Landscaping Series will take place at the UUCSJS Center. (Located at 75 S Pomona Rd., on the corner of Liebig and Pomona, across from Stockton College student housing and parking lots.) “Backyard Invaders and Native Alternatives” will take place on Monday, March 26th at 7:00 PM. “Landscaping for Birds and Other Wildlife" is scheduled for the following Monday, April 2 at 7:00 PM.

Sustainable Mullica Achieves Sustainable Jersey® Bronze Level Certification

Award to be Presented at New Jersey League of Municipalities Conference on November 15

Sustainable Jersey representatives has announced that Mullica Township has met the rigorous requirements to achieve Sustainable Jersey certification. Mullica Township is one of 82 towns out of 350 registered municipalities that have attained certification. Sustainable Jersey's participating communities represent over half the state's municipalities and nearly 75% of its population. Mullica Township will be honored at the Sustainable Jersey awards luncheon on Tuesday, November 15 at the Sheraton Hotel in Atlantic City.

“It’s quite an accomplishment to become Sustainable Jersey certified,” said Pam Mount, Interim Chair of the Sustainable Jersey Board of Trustees. “The certified towns have joined a first rate group of municipalities that are leading the way with impressive sustainability initiatives in New Jersey while providing a model for towns across the United States.”

Certified towns excelled in areas such as improving energy efficiency and health and wellness, reducing waste, sustaining local economies, protecting natural resources, and addressing diversity and equity. “These are exceptional towns with outstanding programs. We’ve been amazed to see how this program has catalyzed community spirit and fostered grassroots leadership, cross-sector creativity and collaboration across New Jersey,” said Donna Drewes, Co-Director of the Institute for Sustainability Planning & Governance at the Municipal Land Use Center at The College of New Jersey (MLUC@TCNJ) and Sustainable Jersey founding partner. Randall Solomon also a Co-Director at the Institute for Sustainability Planning & Governance congratulated the certified towns. “Our certified towns are municipal leaders that are making extraordinary contributions toward the long-term goal of a sustainable New Jersey and world.”

The award winning towns will be recognized at the annual Sustainable Jersey awards luncheon on Tuesday, November 15 at the New Jersey League of Municipalities’ conference. In addition to the award presentations at the luncheon, key note speakers will include James Florio, the former New Jersey Governor and Trustee of the Sustainable Jersey Board of Trustees and project partners Joseph Fiordaliso, Commissioner of the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities and Michele Siekerka, Assistant Commissioner, Economic Growth and Green Energy, at the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.

Adopt-A-Road Clean Up - Saturday, September 3 at 9:00 a.m.

Our new Adopt-a-Road Clean Up Schedule will be every other first Saturday of the month. We will meet next Saturday, September 3, 2011 at 9:00 am at the Egg Harbor City Cemetery. There are now Sustainable Mullica signs at the beginning and end of our section of Moss Mill Road. It is 1.37 miles. During the last clean up 12 volunteers showed up and it really made the job easy! Please mark your calendars and join us for some exercise and good community action. Thanks!

At the top of the the page is a tab you can click to see Mullica's available Adoptable Roads. Anyone can adopt a road, but the grant money must be given to a nonprofit. Feel free to adopt your own road and designate the money to Sustainable Mullica or any nonprofit of your choice.

Also, for those involved with the school, there is an Adopt-a-Schoolyard Program. You can contact ACUA through their website and get on board. It is a great way to do worthwhile work and make a little extra money for other good causes!

In the interest of keeping our Green Team creative, fresh and innovative we will no longer have regular monthly meetings. The meetings were definitely needed to kick off our work and get the ball rolling. Our actions are now completed by action leaders, small committees and individuals committed to their work. Give Your Stuff Away Day - Saturday, May 14

Sustainable Mullica has decided to join "Give Your Stuff Away Day" held on Saturday, May 14th.

All you have to do is leave stuff out that you no longer have a use for and give it away. It's like a yard sale without anyone paying. Unclutter your life, while at the same time, reduce what is going into our landfill.

On May 14th, bring your unwanted stuff to your curb. Some guidelines - no trash, recyclables, illegal or dangerous items. No food, drugs, chemicals, or weapons. Just safe, valuable items we would like to donate. Then watch the fun – or better yet, take a walk and find some free stuff you can use.

The above link has a list of items which are acceptable and which are prohibited.

We would also like to compose a list of those in Mullica participating, so please send an email to us at sustainablemullica@gmail.com or leave your address as a comment here. I'll compose a list you can download from here and then print out and you can be a part of the World's largest giveaway/recycling event.

NJ Bikeschool Program offered at Estell Manor Park

From the County Park Recreation Specialist:

I was hoping you might help me get the word out about the NJ Bikeschool program that we are offering for the first time at the Estell Manor Park. We thought it might be a great way for kids to gear up for spring, and so have scheduled it for Monday, April 25th. The program is for children in 4th to 6th grades. It runs from 10am - 3pm. Presented by Rutgers University and sponsored by the NJ Dept. of Transportation, participants will learn basic bike handling skills and traffic principles, including how to perform a bicycle safety check, fit a helmet, ride with control, and follow the rules of the road. Participants who own a helmet should bring it, or one will be given to them. Loaner bicycles, lunch and snacks will be provided.

Interested participants may pre-register by calling the registration office at Lake Lenape 625-8219, or calling me directly at 625-7000, ext. 5431. Registration on-site requires payment of the $5 fee, and completion of forms that must be signed by a parent or legal guardian. Participants may be dropped off provided that their registration is complete.

If we don't reach a minimum level of interest by April 20th, I'm afraid the program may have to be canceled. Any interest you can drum up for us would be very much appreciated. Thanks so much!

Sustainable Mullica, with the help of Emily Schlee and friends will have a table set up at the elementary school entrance during the parent-teacher conferences on 2/11, 2/14 and 2/15 where they will be handing out "Plastic Bag Fact Sheets" and "Reduce Your Use" Pledge forms. These forms can also be downloaded here, filled out and brought into the elementary or middle school offices to the attention of Jean Gallagher. You can also bring in the filled out form to the Sustainable Mullica meeting, scheduled for Monday, January 28th.

The first 100 to take the pledge will get a free, unbleached cotton, made in the USA, reusable grocery bag with the Sustainable Mullica logo on it.

National "Give Your Stuff Away" Day-Your input needed

We would love to have this event here in Mullica Township. What would this entail? Just you cleaning out some things that you bought that you don't use any longer and bring it to your curb. This can help you unclutter your life, while saving the township money, reducing waste being brought to our transfer station and landfill.

The date is Saturday, May 14, 2011. We all have items we bought and no longer use, but is in great shape and we hate to just throw it away. A great way to save money, declutter and even meet some of your neighbors. Feedback for this event is important to use in order to get the word out on this event. Gayle and Gary Brill have launched their Waste Management Program in our Mullica Township School cafeteria. A special thanks goes out to Gayle & Gary, Doreen Khebzou, Jennifer Polidoro, Pat McCarthy, Roseanne Fittipaldi, Roseanne Lugg and the students for their great effort with the first trash audit. Gayle will now begin her education/outreach part of the program and try to reduce the waste. Stay tuned to learn more and remember to try your best to lessen your impact on the environment!

A big thank you goes out to Lou Vitale, Roseanne & Joe Lugg, Anthony & Rusty Gabris, Roseanne Fittipaldi, Gayle Brill, Mary Hunt & Bernie Graebener, Pat, Jim & Guinness McCarthy, and Al Polk for a job well done. Our first Adopt-a-Road Clean Up was a huge success! We picked up many bags of trash and recycling and Mary also rescued a darling kitten that Anthony has adopted! It was a brisk and refreshing morning. Lou especially enjoyed the long walk and we all felt good about our positive action. Al has promised lunch and Guinness after the next clean up!

We are now at 80 points toward our Sustainable Jersey certification. Kim Johnson submitted recently submitted 10 points for our new Electronics Recycling Depot. Thank you, Kim!

SUSTAINABLE MULLICA ADOPTS-A-ROAD

Sustainable Mullica has adopted a 1.37 mile stretch of Moss Mill Road. It runs from Hanover Avenue to Hamburg Avenue.

We will be doing 6 clean ups each year. ACUA runs their calendar year for this program from Earth Day to Earth Day so in order to get credit for this year’s cycle we will need to do one each month until April. Next year we can spread them out.

We will meet the first Saturday of each month beginning November 6, 2010 at 9:00am at the Egg Harbor City Cemetery. ACUA has supplied all we need to get the job done. All trash and recycling will be left at the corner of Moss Mill Road and Hamburg Avenue. ACUA will be contacted and they will acknowledge our efforts and pick up the litter.

All volunteers are asked to kindly visit the ACUA website and read their guidelines and safety procedures. Children, 11 years and older, may join in. There is an online form that must be printed out and signed.

If you would like to help out but this schedule does not work for you just call or email and you can pick up the materials and organize your own clean up.

Have an old refrigerator/freezer, want it picked up for free and get paid $50?

Sustainable Mullica has teamed up with the NJ Clean Energy Program in their Refrigerator/Freezer Recycling Program. Whether you are planning to purchase a new refrigerator or freezer this year or have an older one in your basement or garage that you want to get rid of, this is the plan for you.

Chances are, your older refrigerator and/or freezer are running up your utility bill by an average of $150 a year. Energy Star has a Refrigerator Retirement Savings Calculator which will help you figure out how much your refrigerator or freezer is costing you to operate and how much you can save by buying a new Energy Star appliance.

You can help lower energy use, reduce your energy bills and protect the environment by keeping harmful materials out of landfills by recycling your old refrigerator and freezer today. There are a few rules: 1) It must operational at time of pick up. They will ask you when you call and I believe they want it plugged in and showing that it is working. This is their way of showing that they are recycling refrigerators and freezers that are using higher energy usage. 2) It must be between 10 cubic feet and 30 cubic feet. 3) Someone over the age of 18 has to sign a release form at time of pick up. 4) You must provide clear and safe access at time of pick up. 5) They prefer models from 1995 and older, but will pick up older models.

How can you sign up? Contact me either by leaving a comment with your email address, emailing me at sustainablemullica@gmail.com or by phone at (609)965-3424 and I will take down your information and give you the number to call to schedule a pick up date and time.

You will receive a $50.00 incentive from NJ Clean Energy for recycling responsibly once your transaction is processed (90-120 days after pick up).

The Unitarian Universalist Center will be holding several environmental events this month, all open to the public.

October 10^th- Sunday - 11:00 am- 10/10/10 Work Party in affiliation with the International 350.org Day of Climate Change Action. They will be having two tours of their soon to be LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Certified building for congregation members and the public. They will also be cleaning Pomona Road which they adopted and doing a clean-up of the grounds.
October 20^th- Wednesday-7pm-The Social Justice Committee and the South Jersey Fair Trade Alliance will be showing the movie The Dark Side of Chocolate. Fair Trade products will also be available for purchase and light refreshments will be served.
October 26^th, Tuesday- 7pm- Sierra Club Presentation- Christina Guhl will be showing the documentary, Coal Country and informing us about the relationship NJ has with the coal industry and what we can do about it. Light refreshments will be provided.

Plastic, Plastic Everywhere

Everywhere you turn, you hear about cutting back on plastic usage, yet everything seems to be in plastic.

BPA, HDPE, PVC, PETE, these acronyms are on all plastics, but what do they mean? Here's a brief primer on plastics (the 7 most commonly used):

PETE (#1 plastic) Polyethylene terephthalate ethylene. Use in water, soda pop, and shampoo bottles. Also in detergents & peanut butter containers. Widely recyclable.

HDPE (#2 plastic) High Density Polyethylene. Use in milk containers, water jugs, bleach bottles (although use of bleach is highly hazardous to you and the environment), cleaning products. Widely recyclable.

Never use PVC ( #3 plastic) Polyvinyl Chloride or Vinyl Chloride. Used in cling wrap, toys, water pipes. Avoid at all costs. Vinyl chloride is a human carcinogen ! Not recycled.

Avoid LDPE (#4 plastic)Low Density Polyethylene. Used in grocery store bags, plastic wrap and baby bottles. Safer than most plastics but not commonly recycled. Safer for food than others and less toxic to produce.

Avoid PP (# 5 plastic ) Polypropylene. Used in food containers, plastic squeeze bottles like ketchup and syrup.

Never use PS (#6 plastic) Polystyrene. Used in Styrofoam containers and opaque cutlery. Highly toxic to the nervous system and the brain. Is a suspected carcinogen. Also may have an effect on the liver, kidney, stomach and blood cells. Not recycled.

Avoid other(#7 plastic) usually polycarbonate. Used in plastic baby bottles, sippy cups, 5 gallon water bottles, sport bottles, and metal food can liners. This is the BPA leacher! Not recycled.

We know it's hard to eliminate plastic usage, but #3, #6 and #7 are the big offenders with orange juice and milk. Next time you're shopping, check the numbers on the bottom and if they have them, try a brand that doesn't use those plastics. Milk and Orange Juice is widely available in cartons now.

PETE and HDPE plastics are recyclable and basically for one time usage only.

Many re-usable sports bottles, sippy cups and baby bottles are now labeled "BPA free", read the labels. For sports bottles, try to use these or stainless reusable bottles.

Lastly, never microwave in plastic or wash plastic in the dishwasher, the hot water breaks down the plastic increases the chemical leaching.

Every little step taken helps. It helps you and it helps the Earth.

SUSTAINABLE MULLICA AWARDED $1,000 GRANT

Yesterday, through Sustainable Jersey Small Grants Program, funded by Walmart, Sustainable Mullica was awarded a $1,000 Capacity-Building Grant. Both President of Sustainable Mullica, Committeeperson Susan Polk and Mayor Michael St. Amour were present for the Grant Media Conference held in Long Branch, NJ.

Susan submitted a three page plan describing what has been accomplished since Sustainable Mullica's inception, as well as goals for 2010-2011 as the application for this grant. The Capacity-Building Grant will be used for purchasing copy paper, copying materials, education resources (posters, charts, books, DVD's, etc), Anti-Idling signs, updating our Natural Resources Inventory, supplies to plant gardens and clothes lines.

We know it's over 90 degrees today, but fall gardening, planting of mums and yard clean up is around the corner and upon stumbling across a few articles, I thought it would make a good post. RePlayground had a great article last September about using shredded newspaper instead of mulch. It keeps moisture in, keeps weeds at bay and helps eradicate weeds by putting a few layers of intact paper down as a barrier. Most newspapers use soy ink now, so it's environmentally friendly.

Much of the trash we generate comes from the packaging on the food we buy, and lunch foods are no exception. In fact, it has been estimated that on average a school-age child using a disposable lunch generates 67 pounds of waste per school year. Sustainable Mullica’s Rain Garden

After successfully completing the Rain Garden Specialist and Trainer Program through Rutgers Cooperative Extension Water Resources Program, Sustainable Mullica’s president, Susan Polk, and husband, Al, created a rain garden. This rain garden is located at 1701 Fifth Avenue, Devonshire, adjacent to a newly constructed pole barn.

Rain gardens are designed to soak up rain water from roofs, driveways, and patios. Rain gardens look like regular flower gardens but they are more. When it rains they fill up with a few inches of rain water that slowly filters into the ground rather than running off into storm drains. Rain gardens capture and filter stormwater and help prevent water pollution. Compared to a patch of lawn, a rain garden allows 30% more water to soak into the ground. They add beauty to neighborhoods and provide wildlife habitat.

The "evils" of sodium lauryl or laureth sulfate

I generally make my own soap to avoid sodium lauryl or laureth sulfate and am currently on my last bar. I also do use Dr. Bronner's Peppermint Castile Soap (Fair Trade) as a shampoo/body wash. The 18-in-1 soap has been around a long time, however I have found it to be a great shampoo for me. However, after reading this current article in Mother Nature Network, it's made me rethink the whole thing. Susan does the "Curly Girl" method, but my mind would allow me to really give it a go. Perhaps I will try this method now using the conditioner once a week. Susan talks the talk, but she also walks the walk. For some the changes are easy, for others it's baby steps, but it's all good because every green change you make, you do make a difference.

Today, I was able to attend the class on "How to make a rain barrel" and learned so much (like adding 2 teaspoons of mineral oil to the rain barrel with prevent mosquito larvae, and you should use a full rain barrel within 3 days and 1 inch of rain drops 5,000 gallons of water!). The making of the rain barrel, with their supplies literally took about 20 minutes. ( Yes, I crawled inside the barrel to make sure the spigot was in straight and put the O-ring on and no, it wasn't easy getting out and I ended up rolling around a bit until someone helped me), but all in all, not having the supplies on hand, making it there was worth it. I would have to check out the ones available in stores to do a cost comparison. 55 gallon containers are available on Craigslist, however the parts for making it you would have to purchase at Lowe's or Home Depot and, to be honest, having them hand you all the supplies made it easier. I plan to paint this one and have an idea in mind and yes, they even give you directions.

Hammonton Green is hosting a Rain Barrel on Sunday, May 23rd from 1:00 to 4:00 PM and I hope to attend that class also (as I want two of them). Cost is $40.00 and covers supplies, but you must pre-register.

Fears for crops as shock figures from America show scale of bee catastrophe

The world may be on the brink of biological disaster after news that a third of US bee colonies did not survive the winter.

Disturbing evidence that honeybees are in terminal decline has emerged from the United States where, for the fourth year in a row, more than a third of colonies have failed to survive the winter.

The decline of the country's estimated 2.4 million beehives began in 2006, when a phenomenon dubbed colony collapse disorder (CCD) led to the disappearance of hundreds of thousands of colonies. Since then more than three million colonies in the US and billions of honeybees worldwide have died and scientists are no nearer to knowing what is causing the catastrophic fall in numbers.

The number of managed honeybee colonies in the US fell by 33.8% last winter, according to the annual survey by the Apiary Inspectors of America and the US government's Agricultural Research Service (ARS).

The collapse in the global honeybee population is a major threat to crops. It is estimated that a third of everything we eat depends upon honeybee pollination, which means that bees contribute some £26bn to the global economy.

Potential causes range from parasites, such as the bloodsucking varroa mite, to viral and bacterial infections, pesticides and poor nutrition stemming from intensive farming methods. The disappearance of so many colonies has also been dubbed "Mary Celeste syndrome" due to the absence of dead bees in many of the empty hives.

US scientists have found 121 different pesticides in samples of bees, wax and pollen, lending credence to the notion that pesticides are a key problem. "We believe that some subtle interactions between nutrition, pesticide exposure and other stressors are converging to kill colonies," said Jeffery Pettis, of the ARS's bee research laboratory.

A global review of honeybee deaths by the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) reported last week that there was no one single cause, but pointed the finger at the "irresponsible use" of pesticides that may damage bee health and make them more susceptible to diseases. Bernard Vallat, the OIE's director-general, warned: "Bees contribute to global food security, and their extinction would represent a terrible biological disaster."

Dave Hackenberg of Hackenberg Apiaries, the Pennsylvania-based commercial beekeeper who first raised the alarm about CCD, said that last year had been the worst yet for bee losses, with 62% of his 2,600 hives dying between May 2009 and April 2010. "It's getting worse," he said. "The AIA survey doesn't give you the full picture because it is only measuring losses through the winter. In the summer the bees are exposed to lots of pesticides. Farmers mix them together and no one has any idea what the effects might be."

Pettis agreed that losses in some commercial operations are running at 50% or greater. "Continued losses of this magnitude are not economically sustainable for commercial beekeepers," he said, adding that a solution may be years away. "Look at Aids, they have billions in research dollars and a causative agent and still no cure. Research takes time and beehives are complex organisms."

In the UK it is still too early to judge how Britain's estimated 250,000 honeybee colonies have fared during the long winter. Tim Lovett, president of the British Beekeepers' Association, said: "Anecdotally, it is hugely variable. There are reports of some beekeepers losing almost a third of their hives and others losing none." Results from a survey of the association's 15,000 members are expected this month.

John Chapple, chairman of the London Beekeepers' Association, put losses among his 150 members at between a fifth and a quarter. Eight of his 36 hives across the capital did not survive. "There are still a lot of mysterious disappearances," he said. "We are no nearer to knowing what is causing them."

Bee farmers in Scotland have reported losses on the American scale for the past three years. Andrew Scarlett, a Perthshire-based bee farmer and honey packer, lost 80% of his 1,200 hives this winter. But he attributed the massive decline to a virulent bacterial infection that quickly spread because of a lack of bee inspectors, coupled with sustained poor weather that prevented honeybees from building up sufficient pollen and nectar stores.

The government's National Bee Unit has always denied the existence of CCD in Britain, despite honeybee losses of 20% during the winter of 2008-09 and close to a third the previous year. It attributes the demise to the varroa mite – which is found in almost every UK hive – and rainy summers that stop bees foraging for food.

In a hard-hitting report last year, the National Audit Office suggested that amateur beekeepers who failed to spot diseases in bees were a threat to honeybees' survival and called for the National Bee Unit to carry out more inspections and train more beekeepers. Last summer MPs on the influential cross-party public accounts committee called on the government to fund more research into what it called the "alarming" decline of honeybees.

The Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has contributed £2.5m towards a £10m fund for research on pollinators. The public accounts committee has called for a significant proportion of this funding to be "ring-fenced" for honeybees. Decisions on which research projects to back are expected this month.
WHY BEES MATTER

Flowering plants require insects for pollination. The most effective is the honeybee, which pollinates 90 commercial crops worldwide. As well as most fruits and vegetables – including apples, oranges, strawberries, onions and carrots – they pollinate nuts, sunflowers and oil-seed rape. Coffee, soya beans, clovers – like alfafa, which is used for cattle feed – and even cotton are all dependent on honeybee pollination to increase yields.

In the UK alone, honeybee pollination is valued at £200m. Mankind has been managing and transporting bees for centuries to pollinate food and produce honey, nature's natural sweetener and antiseptic. Their extinction would mean not only a colourless, meatless diet of cereals and rice, and cottonless clothes, but a landscape without orchards, allotments and meadows of wildflowers – and the collapse of the food chain that sustains wild birds and animals.

On April 22, 2010 millions of people around the world will celebrate Earth Day, marking its 40th anniversary. The idea behind the day—honoring the planet and all living things that inhabit it—began during the early 1960's. The first official U.S. observance of Earth Day was celebrated in 1970 by a Wisconsin senator Gaylord Nelson.

Some people think that Earth Day is a day for the "granola's" or the "Hippies and Tree Huggers", when really, it is for the exact opposite! We know what to do, now we need to help the others understand what this whole thing is about! Everyone is responsible for this planet ; the Chinese, the Americans, the Jewish, the Catholic, the Baptist, the Buddhist, etc..! Everyone! We need to start taking care of this planet that we inhibit for our own good. Earth day is the largest NON - RELIGIOUS holiday celebrated today. Including 184 countries and a 1/2 Billion people. But still, that is only 7 % of the people on earth.

This Earth Day you should try help someone else to become "Eco-conscious". Kind of like "pass it on". Tell someone about the garbage swirls in the Pacific. Show them the photos of the huge amounts of trash found floating in the ocean and the 100,000 related marine animal deaths. Send someone the recycling facts and teach someone to compost! Spread the word! Let's get that 7% up this year. Everyone counts.

Because of the unusually wet winter we had, warnings have already started about how bad the mosquitoes are going to be this year. They carry disease and now that spring has sprung, we thought we would give you some facts, tips and links as an FYI.

Mosquito Facts

•About 3,000 species of mosquitoes have been identified on a worldwide basis. Approximately 150 are known to exist in North America.
•There are approximately 25 known “human nuisance species” of mosquitoes.
•Most adult mosquitoes have a life span of 2-4 weeks.
•Only female mosquitoes bite.
•Mosquitoes are very effective at reproducing– attracting, trapping and killing just one female mosquito at the start of mosquito season can prevent the birth of up to 25,000 more mosquitoes that season alone!
Controlling Mosquitoes

You can reduce mosquito breeding around your home significantly by reducing the amount of water that is stagnating on your property. Be aware... mosquitoes CAN AND WILL develop in any puddle or pool of water that lasts more than 4 days!

•Dispose of cans, plastic containers, pots or similar water-holding containers that have accumulated on your property.
•Drill holes in the bottom of containers that you must leave out of doors– trash cans, recycling bins, etc.
•Clean clogged roof gutters AT LEAST annually.
•Turn over plastic wading pools when not in use.
•Turn over wheelbarrows, empty planters or childrens toys when not in use.
•Do not allow water to stagnate in bird baths.
•Aerate ornamental pools or stock them with fish.
•Clean and chlorinate swimming pools that are not being used. Don’t forget that mosquitoes breed in water that collects on swimming pool covers.
•Use landscaping features or drainage tools to eliminate standing water that collects in low spots on your property.

Young's Skating Center in Mays Landing and the Roller Skating Association has partnered with the President's Challenge Program FIGHT FOR FITNESS. Come to Young's Skating Center from March 11 through June 30 and SKATE A MILLION MILES. Sign up today and take the challenge. When you register to take the challenge and GO HEALTHY, you must give up 4 Unhealthy Habits and replace them with good Healthy Habits. Such as eating chips, soda, etc and replace them with fruits, veggies, water, milk, etc. Stop sitting, watching TV and playing video games. Start skating, walking, bike riding and running! Contact Young's Skating Center for your 4 challenges one time free pass to a healthy lifestyle one mile at a time. Students of Mullica's schools received the Fight for Fitness challenge pass. 3/10/2010 MULLICA REC FAMILY FUN FUNDRAISER

The Mullica Township Rec Association is hosting a great family fun fundraiser that is a physical fitness opportunity for the entire family this Friday night and Saturday.

Middle School night will be on Friday, March 12th from 7:00 until 9:00 PM.

Tot Time for ages 2 through 6 will be held Saturday, March 13th from 10 AM until 12 noon.

Open fun and dinner for the whole family will be Saturday March 13 until 5 PM and 6 until 8 PM.

Cost is only $5.00 for children at the door, parents are free, but come ready to play games, join in on competitions and events for parents also.

Location is Sweetwater Rec on 7th Avenue in Sweetwater. If you have any questions, call Colleen Watson at 929-2419 or Terence Watson 929-2418.
